Sara Mozafari is an interdisciplinary Iranian-Canadian artist and a second-year Ph.D. student in Visual Arts at York University. She holds an MFA from OCAD University and a BA in Architectural Design from the University of Toronto. Her diverse practice includes performance, installation, painting, drawing, architecture, textile, and ceramics.
Sara's research explores how artistic representations influenced by traumatic memories of war, repression, and displacement can challenge prevailing narratives and create a sense of belonging. She weaves tactile and spatial memories into a tapestry of textile and clay, focusing on the intersection of personal and collective memories.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Iran and Canada, earning her project grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. She has received numerous awards, including the Art Gallery of Mississauga Jurors First Prize (2022), OCAD University Project Awards (2020, 2021), and the University of Toronto Best Sculpture Award (2016). Sara was an artist-in-residence at the Akin/MOCA residency project (2017-2018) and a featured artist at the CAFKA Biennial 2023.
Guided by experts in Asian diasporic cultural production, war's impact on women, and Middle Eastern contemporary art, Sara's work bridges personal trauma and collective memory, contributing to feminist theory, diaspora studies, and trauma studies.
