Based in Toronto, Johannes’ multi-disciplinary practice focuses on the many meanings engendered by a body, both human and more-than-human, and often extending the notion of the performer to include nature itself. Since graduating from York University in 1984, he has presented work across Canada as well as internationally, including Berlin, Shanghai, Hamburg, Caen, Paraguay, Brazil, Mexico and Chile. In 2020 he was the artist-in-residence at Western University’s McIntosh Gallery in London, Ontario, presenting the exhibition”Listening To Trees” and realizing the 20-minute video, “Checking In On An Old Copper Beech”.
From 2011 to 2014 Johannes facilitated the Intensive Performance Art Workshop at Artscape Gibraltar Point and curated S.P.A.N.E. (Screening of Performance Art in the Natural Environment). The current iteration of S.P.A.N.E. is presented through the Dunlop Art Gallery and the Regina Public Library. This program is offered in four parts throughout 2021, each referencing one of the following four elements: WATER, AIR, LAND and FIRE.
